3 women changing the way kids learn
Our Story
Rebecca, Robyn, and Martha share a vision to enhance reading education and improve literacy levels for children across North America. They are committed to breaking down barriers to literacy by empowering parents and educators with scientifically proven methods that truly work. Together, they aim to help caregivers build a strong literacy foundation in children from an early age, fostering not just reading skills but also a lifelong positive association with learning.
Rebecca
Rebecca is a qualified teacher having worked in education for over 10 years. After having her daughter, Rebecca began to reflect on how children learn to read. She realized that, despite her teaching qualifications and time at teacher's college, she lacked the specific knowledge on how to effectively teach reading. This curiosity inspired her to receive Orton-Gillingham training and led her to create The Active Reader in order to build a brighter future for her children and others by empowering parents with tools for teaching reading.
Robyn
As a child, Robyn struggled with focus, completing work, and especially reading. Though never diagnosed with a learning disability, school was tough. Everything changed when, 10 years ago, she trained in the Orton-Gillingham method, a structured literacy approach. This not only helped her overcome her own reading challenges but sparked her passion for helping others. Robyn co-founded The Active Reader as a pillar to support young learners and has since dedicated her life to empowering struggling readers.
Martha
Martha Jodhan is a graduate with an Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma and a BA in Sociology. Her passion for teaching children was inspired by her mother’s work and encouragement. Martha’s mother, trained in Orton-Gillingham (OG) and has been involved with the Trinidad Dyslexia Association for many years. Watching her mother’s dedication motivated Martha to pursue her own OG training which led her to develop a deep love for the Science of Reading. Now, Martha is eager to help students and expand the reach of Orton-Gillingham.
