What is a growth mindset?

Growth mindset was a term coined by psychologist Carol Dweck. Having a growth mindset means you believe that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. You embrace challenges, learn from criticism, take failure as a learning opportunity and celebrate and learn from other's successes.

How do we foster a growth mindset in our children?

When we teach children how to identify negative thought patters and then transform these thoughts into positive statements, they will learn how to move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. With practice, they will transform their inner dialogue and learn how to speak kindly to themselves ultimately developing the intrinsic motivation to grow and learn from all situations that come their way.

How to use the cards?

  • Purchase your PDF
  • Download and print out the PDF
  • Cut out the emotion cards: There are lines on the page indicating where you should cut and where you should fold. Cut out each card lengthwise and fold them in the middle, making them double sided. Tape the two sides together.
  • Option 1: Lay the cards out in front of your child, negative side up and discuss how they can transform negative statements into positive.
  • Option 2: When a moment of self doubt arises, pull out the cards and find the appropriate negative phrase. Flip the card over and change the mindset from negative to positive. Have your child repeat the positive phrase and ask them how they feel.
